How do you know how good past players were when they don’t have stats?
I can’t believe such a general stat such as tackles weren’t recorded till 2001. I’m not exactly new to football, but my first season was the one that just passed. So how do you know how dominant Jack Ham was, how intimidating Deacon Jones was, how scary Jack Lambert was?
I’m not an American so.
A very good question. The answer is “We don’t really know how good they were.”
If you don’t have films of games, there is no personal way you can see a particular players value to his team or to the league. For some, you can get highlight videos or, in some cases, rebroadcasts for Super Bowl games or championship games. But those highlights are just a sample of a player’s career performances.
Most of the information about individual players from past days comes from media reports. And often, those reports were slanted with East coast and, to a lessor degree, West coast biases. Also, back in those days, the media coverage was concentrated on the championship level teams. That doesn’t mean they weren’t doing a good job, since that’s where the news was.
But as a result, a great player on a mediocre team would get much less coverage than a good player on a media favored team.
One of the things I enjoy are the recorded interviews with retired players from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. You can get a real flavor of what the game was like back then, and opinions from guys who were in the trenches about who the great players and coaches were.
You can also learn a lot by reading books written by players and coaches from those time frames.
So with research, you can develop your own opinions about how good players from the past days were. And others may disagree with your opinions, but that doesn’t mean you are right or wrong.
As your question implies, there aren’t stats to compare so opinions are all we have.
