Ever since I was a child, the thrill of opening a hockey card deck was indescribable. When you're a kid, you know nothing of borders. I guess he had a million cards and opened each package would bring new photos and wonderous, teams and players. I always appreciate when he pulled a card from a master of team. Every year I look forward to buying the new season of O-Pee-Chee hockey cards. It was fun and cheap for a child to collect. Each pack contains only 35 cents.
Something happened in the 1990s that changed the industry forever. Looks like someone woke up one day and decided hockey cards were valuable. prices of overnight started shooting and start-ups began to produce hockey cards at an alarming rate. Suddenly, it did not cost 35 cents more for a package letters, now is 3, 4 and $ 5 per package. As a child he loved to pick, I loved the idea that something my old cards were worth. bought, sold and sell many cards throughout the excitement of the 1990s. Suddenly it seemed to come crashing down.
The companies had over-cards cards and many people thought were worth much money, since nobody wanted. Why? Because we all had the same cards, there was no industry standard. Unscrupulous companies made so much money by selling too many cards to everyone. It seemed that the industry turned sour.
Over the next few years many companies went out of business cards. Nobody wanted regular cards overpriced. It was in recent years that the norms and values have been added in the industry. Hockey cards are mostly still expensive, but now people have taken the collection to the next level. Gone are the days of a normal card. Now you can get autographs, game used items, prints summary, variations of all kinds and of different types of beautiful cards in different sets. The excitement of the hockey cards seems to have returned to collectors of cards, although these days it looks more like a lottery ticket or investment that youthful exuberance good.
One thing has remained constant has been the thrill of throwing the first letter of the next great player. This card is affectionately known as the "Rookie Card ". Since childhood, it was exciting to pull the new player every year … the good young player that everyone wanted. The rookie card. Each year a new crop of young players entering the NHL's quest for greatness. This is why I'm still an avid collector. The big business and special cards and sets that come and go. The constant is the thrill of pulling that next great player. This still brings the child out of me, that passion is my hobby of card collecting.
